There is a major shift in how businesses perceive and use IT within their operations:

Cloud 1st, Channel 1st Approach

As an LSP, rhipe are a facilitator, ensuring that the correct licensing program is purchased by the right party.  Traditionally this has been directly to the end customer business and rhipe will continue to facilitate these transactions.  However we recognise that whilst businesses may be the consumer of licenses, in a cloud world the service provider has a central role to play.

With a cloud channel 1st approach we:

  • Honour existing relationships between businesses and their service provider
  • Create opportunities within our existing service provider network (Where consistent with existing relationships)

Server and Cloud Enrolment

In the past, to have an Enterprise Agreement (EA), an organisation had to cover at least 250 Devices or Users for Desktop software and/or Online Services. There was no EA like solution if you just wanted to cover your Server and Application Platforms. To address this Microsoft introduced three new agreements types. These were Enrollment for Application Platform (EAP), Enrollment for Core Infrastructure (ECI), and Enrollment for Windows Azure (EWA). These Enrollments have now been consolidated and replaced with the Server & Cloud Enrollment (SCE). SCE offers programmatic discounts, favourable EA terms, flexible licensing options (mix of subscription and perpetual licensing) and the ability to purchase Azure Cloud Services. SCE is designed with Hybrid Cloud in mind. So whether you’re an End User Customer, an Independent Software Vendor (ISV), or a Managed Services Provider (MSP), the SCE is the ultimate licensing agreement.

Volume Licensing

This response relates to Office 365 Proplus, not Exchange Online.. etc.
End users from the same company who have the Office 365 Proplus license can now use the shared computer activation feature and run O365 Proplus from the same hardware.

There are three ways to have O365 ProPlus hosted:

  • Customer self-hosted
  • Through Azure VM
  • Through SPLA partner's physically dedicated platform

If you have a single tenant environment (Dedicated physical server), you can provide the infrastructure under SPLA (Windows SPLA) and the customer can bring their own Microsoft Apps without the need to have SA. This  only applies if the end user has purchased through volume licenses program and no other non-SPLA Microsoft licensing channels. Previously the only way you could mix SPLA with end user licenses was through License Mobility, now you don`t require SA if this is on a physically dedicated server. SA and License Mobility still required if you want to bring end user licenses to your shared hosted/multi-tenant environment.

The Enterprise Cloud Suite (ECS) is a new offering for Enterprise Agreement Customers. It is available for purchase from 1 December 2014 and is licensed per User. Included in ECS are Office 365 E3, the Enterprise Mobility Suite, and Windows PC OS. This is the first time Microsoft has offered Windows PC OS on a per User basis. This greatly simplifies licensing in a cloud-first, mobile-first world. Further information is available here.

There are many factors that will determine which of these programs is right for your specific circumstances.  Further information on these programs can be found here for Open and here for SCE.  However from discussions with many service providers the top two factors are:

  • Payment in advance (Open) vs Payment in arrears (SCE)
  • Requirement for Enterprise Management Portal to manage multiple customers (Yes under SCE)
